Gerendák (Part II)
The construction of Gerendák, a home on Lake Wylie in Charlotte, NC, is in its final phase.
I shared with you the design process of this home before:
In this post I would like to share a few progress images of the construction. But first - here are some of the folks involved in the process:
Buddy Edwards of Lynn Luxury Homes - Construction
Geri Eaker of Freespace Design - Interiors
Intelligent Design Engineering - Structure
The Integrated Home - Smart Home Technology
Bauwerk - Exterior Doors and Windows
Jim Daniels of Custom Cabinet Studio - Built-Ins
Southern Energy Management - Solar Panel System
Scott Weatherup of C&D Landscapes - Landscaping
The Construction will have taken a little shy of two years by the time it will be wrapped up.
A good bit of the time went into the preparation of the site. Most of the trees were kept, which left a small staging area to operate in. This plus a steep site made for careful first steps. The construction of the home itself took about a year and a half. It began right with the start of the covid-19 pandemic and its various distribution and labor issues. Yet the builder and client summoned grit an perseverance and worked though it all. The organizational skills from Buddy Edwards, the builder, proved to be invaluable.
A quick intro.
As a reminder, this house sits on Lake Wylie on the border of North and South Carolina.
The clients asked me to create an “extraordinary home”. That was it. And after a bit of probing - to create one that would cantilever into the treetops overlooking the lake, While keeping them grounded and without stairs to climb as they want to grow old in there.
So we cut a set of stone walls into the steep hill and placed the house on top, careening over the edges, providing views from all the primary spaces. They enter on a ground floor that takes them hovering into thin air at the edges.
It’s about Crafting a piece of Art.
A project like this not only demanded exceptional organizational skills from the builder, but a love for the craft an attention to detail. When folks talk to you about building a home, this is not it.
This is the crafting of a built environment, a one of a kind artful stage for the life of the homeowners.
While the same trades are asked to be involved, albeit the best only, they are being asked to take their skills to another level. They get to shine, think through problems, and develop answers . Every last piece is specific. Is intentional. Is considered.
Each trade is creating their own masterpieces. Just so that in the end a place is created that is specific, intentional, and considered.
And so what you see here is not “homebuilding”. It’s the crafting of a piece of art.
I hope this quick tour gives you and idea of what goes into the building of a modern home such as this one. I can’t wait to share with you the finished product.
